I came across this website recently, and I couldn't resist adding my own entry. What a beautiful place! I spent many happy holidays in Nethy as a youngster in the 1980s, and I loved it. We stayed in a house called Craigmore, just outside the village on the road to Tomintoul, and it was there that I fell in love with forest walks. I could just go out the back door and walk for miles. It was so tranquil and the air was so clean and fresh. I could also be found regularly on the golf course just down the road. If I'm honest, it wasn't much of a course in the early days, but I watched it develop and it a provides a great challenge for anyone now. It was a great base too for visiting places like Aviemore, Coylumbridge and Boat of Garten - all lovely places in their own way. I still visit the area from time to time, and it has changed very little. There are a few more houses, but it still feels the same. Sending my best wishes to everyone there.

My Gran was brought up in Nethybridge before moving to Glasgow when she got married. I would dearly like to bring my Father back to see Nethy. I myself have returned last year and hope to visit again and bring my dad. I am looking to obtain some old photos of the area. I would also like to know if anyone has details of a car hire that I could possibly use as my father does not have great mobility ? as I am possibly looking into coming by train but no firm plans as yet on that one.

I am looking for information about two homesteads, Reimore or Rymore in Nethy Bridge and Chapelton in Tulloch. These were the ancestral homes of my maternal great grandparents, Charles McGregor Grant and Barbara Grant nee Grant, respectively. Also any information as to whether descendants of these two families still live in these residences. Also are there any maps available of Abernethy/Nethy Bridge and surrounds from the late 1800s?

Hi, I'm trying to trace information about my great grandmother, Marion Henderson. On her marriage certificate it states her name as Marion Cruickshank, formerly Conley. Her parents are listed as Andrew Conley (who was a joiner) and Margaret Conley (nee Chalmers) - her parents were both deceased when she married in 1915. She was born around 1894 and her residence on the marriage certificate was Rosebank Cottage, Nethy Bridge. If anyone has any information on Marion or her parents I would be very grateful if you could contact me. Many thanks, Debbie Henderson

In 1916-17 my father’s cousin Alex was “boarded out” with Mr and Mrs John Grant whose address was given as Cullochy Cottage, initially in the paperwork the cottage was placed in Boat of Garten but this was subsequently amended to Tulloch, Aviemore. Alex went to Kincardine School. I spend a lot of time in the area and would like to know where Cullochy Cottage is or was. If anyone has information on boarding out in the area, that would be a bonus. Thanks

I'm coming to Nethy Bridge in September to see where my grandfather emigrated to Canada from in 1907. I'll be coming from Inverness for the day. My great grandfather Frank Matheson was a deacon at the Church of Scotland in Abernethy/Nethy Bridge. Does the church still stand? How many cemeteries are in Nethy Bridge? I have a great deal of genealogical info but there are gaps and I want to see what I can find in the cemeteries. If someone could send me details about the cemeteries and the church, I'd be most grateful. Thank you!!

Can anyone help. This is my G Grandfather. I have attached information for you that may help us find his family in Scotland. We have been looking for over 20 years. Anything is appreciated. THE CYCLOPEDIA OF NEW ZEALAND [OTAGO & SOUTHLAND PROVINCIAL DISTRICTS] GRANT, ALEXANDER Previous Section | Table of Contents | Up | Next Section GRANT, ALEXANDER , Farmer, “Fern Hill,” Ardgowan. Mr. Grant was born in Abernethy-on-Spey, Scotland, in 1842, and was brought up to a country life, by his father, who was a farmer in that district. Mr. Grant commenced work at the age of ten yeas, and came by the ship “Schleswig Bride,” to Port Chalmers, in 1868. He found employment at Tokarahi for six months, and returned to the Oamaru district in 1869 for the harvest of that year. Since then Mr. Grant has been continuously connected with the district, and owns a freehold section of 195 acres at Hampden in addition to “Fern Hill,” which consists of sixty-five acres of freehold. As a Freemason Mr. Grant is attached to Lodge Oamaru Kilwinning. He was married, in 1875, to a daughter of the late Mr. William Donald, of Banff, Scotland, and has eight sons and two daughters. Please guys I am desperate now to remind all you enthusiastic gardeners that my poop pile is growing out of it's box.... Feel free to go and help yourselves. It is the big field opposite Kimberley as you leave the village going towards Boat of Garten. Just pop/lean over the fence and grab a bucket or a bag at any time. I do have other piles and if you want to get a big load and have a vehicle that can go to the top, then please let me know and I will meet up and open the gates for you and keep nosy ponies at bay. The heaps at the roadside are all free of any drugs, when they are wormed or have any treatment the muck is put elsewhere, so I am pretty sure there are no 'drugs' in the poop. I keep the muck as organic as possible with my feeds etc but cannot guarantee what people may feed them over the fence. Happy gardening folks and thank you in advance.. Once again I must write to compliment you on the immaculate state of this beautiful village. Last week we made our second visit of the year, and the flower displays by the notice board are a credit to all concerned. As ever, it was a joy to walk in the Dell. My husband is a traditional musician, and sitting on a bench in the Dell one day, he felt inspired to write a strathspey, which he called , simply, The Dell, and which he now plays on his fiddle. Maybe one day he`ll play it for the villagers.

Hi all' What a great website! Like so many others I have such happy memories of a Nethy childhood. For 15 years my father, myself and two younger brothers rented the same house for the entire 7 - 8 weeks of the school summer holidays. This was Malvern, with its back to the railway line.............I still recall the trains running and the drivers waving at the "railway children". Changed days in the village now. I still remember so many names and i know that the house has changed hands since.......indeed when the Skeltons initially decided to sell they offered it to my Dad first. Sadly but quite practically he said NO. Our visits were in the mid 60s to 1979ish. Years later and i cannot stay away..........coming up again next week for a short stay. Keep looking after the place for me!!!

I am so glad to hear that you had a good holiday in Nethy Bridge. I am really glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay this year too. It has been rather stunning - either fantastic snow or fantastic sun which we have had for the last week up to 21 degrees in the shade! As to your family, what fun - thanks for telling us that. I'm just back from a wonderful week's holiday up in Nethy with my wife and kids. It was wonderful to be back in the village as for about 15 years of summer holidays as a kid I came up with my family to Nethy in the 1970's and early 80's. Folk may be interested to hear that two of my elder brothers are Gavin and Scott Hastings, who in their adult lives went on to play international rugby for Scotland and the British Lions. Nethy Bridge played a big part in all our childhoods!

As a young teenager, my parents brought us from Edinburgh for our summer holidays, staying at the home of a dear, wonderful lady called Mrs McCook on Dell road. This was back in the mid 50,s. We enjoyed her hospitality immensely. My parents took us on many walks in the area as well as excursion train trips out of the rail station in Nethybridge. When we arrived from Edinburgh it was at Broomhill railway station. I enjoyed everything about our time at Nethy and will always remember the kindness of the local residents. Bless you all for leaving me with wonderful memories. Peter

Yes, it really IS that snowy! The good news though is that the main roads are all clear and life is pretty well back to normal! It is simply beautiful so you should enjoy your visit. It has been cold but clear for a few days now so the sun has melted the snow on many paths and roads and so you'll enjoy your trip to our Nethy Bridge winter wonderland - I hope! Have a look at what we have had here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/abernethybunkhouses/sets/72157614030652171/ and the weather forecast here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/365 Of course, I can't promise that we won't have had more!

Hi Nethy Bridge residents. I am searching for more information or even a photograph if possible of my grandmother's birthplace in Nethy Bridge. Named Barbara Cruickshank, she was born at Seafield Cottage No. 1 at Nethy Bridge in May, 1891. Parents were James Cruickshank (a factor we believe) and Isabella Robertson who ended up living in The Croft at Tomatin until they died in the 1940's. If anyone had a photo of the cottage or knows anything more of the Cruickshanks in Nethy Bridge perhaps they could email me in Australia. Granny lived to 102, dying in Melbourne, Australia and spoke often of Nethy Bridge and the surrounding area where she grew up.

Hello, my boyfriend and I are attending a wedding on 25 July in Nethy Bridge, then staying for the week in a self catering cottage with our dog. We will be driving up from Scarborough via London that morning, arriving for the wedding at 2pm. Problem is, what to do with Sidney-the-dog while we're at the wedding? The 2 local kennels I have tried are full, and we can't leave him alone in the holiday house, or in our car (he is only 6 months). Can anyone out there puppy-sit for us between about 1pm and 10-10.30pm on the Saturday when I (the sober one!) will come and collect him? He is a sweet dog – a rottweiler/staff X from Battersea Dogs Home but don't hold that against him... He's very gentle, and good with children and cats. He'd love it if there were other dogs to hang out with (though he'd probably be a bit over-excited at first) and he's toilet trained. We'd be really grateful if anyone can help (and happy to pay). Thanks, Anna

Hi, I am doing my family tree, and have found that some of my family lived in Gatehouse (according to the 1881 census) and Garten Road Cottage (they are at that address on 1891 and 1901 census, I think they could be at either Tulloch or Cullachie?? I was wondering if anyone knew where abouts these two properties were.

I have replied to Stefania and explained that as a Green village we are cutting down on the use of brochures as much as possible. I suggested that she should use the pdf list to view the full list of accommodation with their grading and bed numbers on one sheet. She has replied to me personally. have a great stay when you get here, Stephania

Dear Melanie - I am sorry to read your entry in the Nethybridge Guestbook. When your husband phoned in early January he inferred during our conversation that you had a good holiday in the Old Smithy but was upset at the cleaning deduction. We do say night storage heating is free but apologise if this was not clear enough as it is not full central heating.New Year was a very cold week by recent standards & I believe that several houses ran out of bottled gas for heating & several others were damaged by burst pipes/flooding. There are many attractive features to the Old Smithy such as the multi fuel stove, its old fashioned character & its river bank setting & we do have many satisfied visitors.

G'day, I'm from Australia, I'm trying to find my Roy roots in Scotland. I'm 5th generation convict stock, does any Roy's in the area have a convict transported to Australia in the early 1800, Campbell Roy, his grandmother was Mary from Glasgow (he lived with her) he work with his uncle John as a painter, Campbell was a teen when he was transportered, we don't know his mum, we think his dad was William, high up in the Army, it would be great if someone had any information, even if they don't it would be nice to get to know some Roy's over there, from the great land down under, Irene :)

We would like to thank everyone in the village who made us welcome over the New Year. I would not recommend the 'Old Smithy' self catering. Firstly we were told that heating was included in the price. This was only partially true. There was no included heating in the bathroom or two of the bedrooms, we had to put pound coins in the meter to make these work. Then the owner decided to keep some of the security deposit he had demanded. We felt this was unjust. His claims that it took hours to clean the house were insulting and we felt he was just trying to charge extra.

Hello Does anybody know the owners of Rymore Wood Cottage? I found the details through the cottages4you website and was dismayed to learn they have removed it from their list of properties in 2009. I was hoping the current owners would allow me to book direct but I have searched the internet and can find no alternative contact details. The cottage and village have made such an impression on me, I would lo0ve to stay there. Many thanks Louise.

Trying to find information about a croft near Mains of Tulloch. The croft was known as Thomchaldon/Thomchalton or perhaps Toma-Cautin. I believe the croft burned down in the 1800's and the remains of the buildings are still visible. I have traced my family back to this croft in the late 1600's. One of the sons married into the Grant family crofting at Rynuan. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Nethy Bridge I wonder if you can help? I am trying to research my past - as you will know genealogy is now a very popular past time! My Great-Grandfather - Rev John Ross - was a United Free Church Minister It would appear that he lived at the Manse at Nethy Bridge and was certainly a minister there in 1927 I just wondered wether you, or anybody at Abernethy, knows anything about John Ross. I believe but so far can't be certain, that his father would be Rev Archibald Ross and he had two daughters - Ruth Ross and Kathleen Ross Thank you very much for your time Simon Priestman

Origionally from Edinburgh and from a large family, my parents took us several summers to Nethybridge. We stayed at the home of a very charming lady by the name of Mrs.McCook, I believe on Dell Road. We always looked forward to coming to this charming village via steam train from Edinburgh and changing at Boat of Garten. We got of the train at Broomhill and a taxi took us all into Nethybridge. I shall always treasure those happy days and the kindness of the local people.

I am a third year Geography student at Newcastle University currently writing my dissertation on second home ownership in Nethybridge. I have spent much time in Nethy as my grandparents (Lindsay and Janet Henderson) have lived there for over 20 years and it has always seemed to be a fascinating and controversial topic! If you have any thoughts on the subject, particularly involving positive and negative impacts of second homes (as opposed to rented holiday homes), in Nethy then I would be interested to hear from you! Thank you so much to everyone that has already been so helpful with my research. Many thanks.

The information you gave me was fantastic. But a have one more question that has been puzzling me for some time. Not far from Castle Roy/Abernethy Kirk there is a small path that is just off the main road. There is a sign which says on it, No Access on the 29th of Feb and I know this is only once very four years. I first thought it was a by-law. But could you please let me know and a will send you picture of sign if you don't know what one a mean. Thanks Martin

Hello Martin, You raise an interesting question below about footpaths. Explore Abernethy - see more at http://www.nethybridge.com/html/thingstodo/explore.php organise these and I copy below what they say about the footpath closure ... This was a condition of Explore Abernethy using this particular section of path / land. The landowner was concerned that it might become a Right of Way, so we had to erect this sign to deter access on 29 Feb every 4 yrs Things have moved on since then, with the new access legislation which allows freedom of access within Scotland provided people behave responsibly. Hope that explains Martin's query - we do get a few folk asking about it, thinking it's some kind of joke! best wishes ELspeth

Last year we visited Nethybridge and enjoyed the area so much that we are coming back to stay at the Abernethy Centre for a holiday. Your Virtual tour map and Strathspey maps are first class as is the "Things to do" list. The butchers shop in the village is second to none, do people realise what a treasure they have, it was the topic of coversation the other day among some retired men in the Southside of Glasgow, we were singing its praises, it is well worthy of a mention in the village guide.

I visited Nethybridge in summer 2006,I was charmed by the place which is a complete contrast to where I live in Norfolk. My mission then was to locate 2 addresses & buildings, I asked several residents and made enquiries at the community centre but had no luck. The places in question are The Residence of the Poor, Seafield Place. Rosebank Cottage Abernethy as it was in 1922. I would appreciate any information anyone can give. The highlight of my visit was sighting a Red Squirrel outside Mustard`s Butchers.

It may have been Series 3 and Episode 4 When Golly reveals that Jessica is his daughter. Golly's partner Alison had left the Highlands years ago, taking their daughter, Jessica, with her. Jessica is naturally horrified to discover the truth and takes her anger out on Golly. They later make friends and decide to stay in touch. I am not 100% sure but i think it may have been when Jessica and Golly went to a funeral, may have been a relative of Jessica's - the funeral was held in Nethy Bridge.

Watching the sports games ; seeing the young girls dancing ,as light as angels;talking to the representatives of the Grant family ,a special thanks to sir Archibald Grant for his gentle answers to our curious questions about kilts (and what is underneath);eating the delicious lunch, and the almond cakes made by the local ladies ;listening to the bands and ,above all pipers !!!
